I have noticed that many of us are saving/collecting Bicentennial quarters.

My question is "why."

Unless they are "S" minted I see no collectible value in them.

I have a friend who saves them and I have given him dozens of them which I found while CRHing.

I know they are "cool" but please tell me what I am missing.

Some people think they have a premium.
Same as Barr $1 notes.

My grandfather collects them, for sentimental value.

They are "different" so people assume different = rare when in reality it doesn't.

I have to admit, I have a difficult time letting them go when found.

I was in elementary school during the bicentennial. It was a big deal, so the nostalgia is there. I remember my mom getting excited every time she got one in change.

That's the beauty of coin collecting--people collect what they want. No issue with that--it's a good thing. Every bicentennial D quarter I come across I look for the sought after DDO--the big one. Found a great example a few years back. In all, I have a few tubes of bicentennials--all MS63 or better, many lightly toned--in addition to a few Dansco album quarter sets.

This reminds me of people in Canada hoarding 1973 quarters because of the different picture. When I was a kid, I'd hoard 1967 pennies, again because they were different. I still do this with various commem coins I like to a certain extent. Sometimes you see an auction selling 300-400 of the 1973 quarters in one lot because someone had accumulated them. I think people are just attracted to something they find that looks different. Now with so many circulating commem coins out there both in Canada and the US, the novelty isn't there anymore.

For me as a kid in the 80s/90s it was one of the items that was different that caught my eye and turned me into a collector.

As for now, habit, and the fact that I think the drummer boy reverse is about as beautiful of design as there has been. It was perfect. Especially considering its competition at the time of dead presidents, memorial buildings, art deco eagles, and bushels of wheat and whatever was on the dime. To a 10 year old in California at the time, that drummer boy was awesome!

I don't. I see plenty of them in circulation searching rolls.

Some mention the novelty of seeing/finding something different.

Not that they are "not" out there but I literally don't see "any" 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial's out there. People have scooped those up for sure.

Same with the 2009-P&D Jefferson nickels. Even though they had mintages of around 40 million (P) and 49 million (D) you almost never see them in pocket change or find them during roll searching.

Funny! I just dumped three rolls that I had saved over the years at the bank. It took a long time to decide they were only taking up space. For those of us who grew up between the classic and modern commemorative crazes, this was the closest we got to any special releases.

Just hope there were no MS-69's or 70's in those rolls!
