East of the bust" ... you don't mean the spiked chin 'signature' do you?

I guess I was. Never noticed the parallel lines in the lower field to be die markers of the spike chin. Now I do

My experience with NGC photos is that they are most often too dark ... too difficult to see detail... and this is one of them - at least IMO.

Nope, not for me at least. What made me pause are the multiple N-S abrasions east of the forehead and nose. The photos aren't clear enough to get a feel for whether there may be cause for concern.

No, those are the die marks typically seen with the spiked chin variety. I believe @fortcollins is referring to the short vertical lines along the forehead, which are pretty subtle.

Nope, not the die markers. What I can't quite make out are several N-S lines between the forehead and nose and the rim. The most visible lines are in the field below "Y" of LIBERTY, roughly centered between the forehead/nose and the rim. Yes, they are subtle.

My pause is whether they are from an old cleaning or from an attempt to remove surface crud from the coin. If they are beneath solid toning, they very likely would be market acceptable. If they are on the surface, they would have to be be more recent, and could be a TPG eye appeal grading issue, though not necessarily an issue in hand. The photos aren't clear enough to be sure. The rubbing on the reverse is easier to see, and is not enough to warrant an eye appeal adjustment.

I'm torn here between EF-40 and EF-45, but if there is an eye appeal issue from the rubbing, I could see NGC knocking it at least a half step. What I'm driving at is that an older surface abrasion that may be market acceptable in hand could make this one undergraded.

it's such a close call between EF40 & EF45 it's a toss up.

OK, times up. NGC graded this coin as XF45 BN Spiked Chin. People were close, but perhaps a tad conservative.

i think the strike weakness especially on the obverse contributed to the softer grades

The grade answered my question.

EF-45 is the high side of spot on, which means NGC didn't eye appeal adjust the grade down to the lower side, EF-40.

NGC has an annoying habit of knocking coins with cabinet rub or older wiping a half step or so. This creates a bourse floor cherrypicking opportunity. Early coppers, Seated coinage, and Buffs seem to be among their most frequently undergraded coins. Here, on a spiked chin, an EF-40 eye appeal knock could have created about a $100-$125 cherrypick opportunity.

This coin is definitely priced as a X45 and rich at that: $525.
