How common are off center strikes? I was sitting in my daughters car and noticed this penny. It looked strange and then I saw that the area from about 6 O'clock to 9 is missing the rim.

And when I say missing the rim, I mean that you cannot even catch your finger nail on it.

One a side note; my family is really getting a kick out of the attention I am giving all the coins I come in contact with.....I am so glad that I can show them, using this forum, that it not really a mental problem. I mean, it's not is it?

Thanks,
Glen

If the reverse is normal, then it is not off center. You would have a case of misaligned dies(MAD strike) which is somewhat common and only brings a premium if it intrudes on the design.

You know, I find myself wondering that too sometimes, and a certain set of lyrics from Dark Side of the Moon come to mind-

"I've been mad for years, absolutely years, been
over the edge for yonks..."
"I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the
most of us...very hard to explain why you're mad, even
if you're not mad..."

Some slight misalignment is to be expected with coins. The ONLY time this sort of thing has any value at all is when there is a bit of the design missing because the die is set so far off center. That's scarce, and that's valuable.

Thanks for the info. In just a few short years I'll stop asking about every coin I see! And hey, that's my favorite album of all time, but you had to change the words a little didn't you?
