I've heard that the laws in China allow exact replicas of any coins dated before 1949 to be sold within the country, so the 1965-D Dime would in fact be illegal to sell 'in-country', but since yours would be for export to the U.S., they could likely worm out of that one.

And then when the coin gets to the U.S., would it have to have a 'Copy' stamp if it can be conclusively proven that no originals ever existed?

Legally, I think it would be considered a 'phantom coin', 'fantasy coin', or whatever you want to call a new physical minting of a 'non-existent' type of coin.

I guess this logic would rule out some newly-made 1933 Double Eagles and 1964-D Peace dollars, because original coins did exist at one time, and if the replicas were too well made, the Secret Service might confiscate them!
