I was searching for the diameter of a coin from San Marino (https://www.NGCcoin.com/price-guide...uid-1526992) and noticed several of the coins I looked at from the 1970s had tens of thousands of units melted down at the mint.
Anyone know why they would melt these guys down?

link not working,

without researching all of san marinos history I can't say for sure, but it looks like the lira was produced from 1864-1938, and then again 1972-present.

so probably an alloy recovery program, and/or politically erasing history by demonetizing the currency in between those time frames

Lack of demand.

They are a product for tourists and exported to collectors, not for circulation.

Better to use the recycled silver for the next year's release than to spend money buying new silver.

Thanks! That makes sense. Such a small country, no need for all these coins. I remember when I collected stamps I had a lot of unused San Marino postage, very pretty, obviously made for collectors and not for the letter writers of the republic.

I love San Marino coins as they always differ but did wonder why they changed designs every year. Now I know. Thanks.
