PCGS - The timeless allure of the United States type coin set has appealed to the masses of coin collectors for generations. Cobbling together representative coinage from each period of United States history going back to the start of federal coins in the 1790s is a daunting objective, one that takes many collectors decades to achieve. Part of the challenge comes in simply finding the funds to buy the necessary coins to complete a set - and pieces symbolizing the early American period of coinage of the 1790s and early 1800s can get really pricey, really quickly.

Draped Bust Dollar, 1799 $1, PCGS MS66

Surely, one of the most expensive coins in any non-gold type set is the mighty Draped Bust Dollar, a type coin whose world-famous poster child is none other than the 1804 Dollar. While few can afford the seven-figure 1804 Draped Bust Dollar, its earlier, much more common counterparts offer many collectors a relatively more affordable opportunity to own an example of this beloved early American type.

As many collectors know, the 1804 Draped Bust Dollar isn't only the latest date in the Draped Bust Dollar series, but that most iconic rare date was also actually made many years after 1804, with the original Class I 1804 Dollar strikes coming along around 1834 to 1835. Thus, all other Draped Bust Dollars came along before the 1804, and these are much more common and affordable than the "King of American Coins."

I've had the privilege of viewing and handling some incredible examples. From the few choice AU to MS ones we have in the shop, to a few of the 1804 Dollars I can say that there is a reason that this is my favorite american coin.

Great article. I suggest if you only read the initial part, clicking to expand that article to read it in full.

Yes, as a Type Set collector, it's needed, and I'm fortunate to be able to have purchased a nice one for my Type Set (1798). Yes, this coin is old, and has a lot of historical meaning. However, while it's one of my very few coins valued above $10,000, I have to admit it doesn't move me. I like so many of my other coins better, including Seated dollars and Half Dollars, Capped Bust Half and Bust Quarter, etc.

Steve

Look, if you really like Seated halves I'd be more than happy to trade my half for your dollar

I thought it takes TWO Half Dollars to equal a Dollar? Now, if you offer two, .....

Your offers are WAY TOO LOW! I clearly indicated I like Seated halves and Capped Bust Halves better than this plain Bust Dollar (lol).

I gotcha an EF-40 Capped Half and a 64 Seated half. I'm taking all the risk here.
