Something is on the coin. You can see it flaking off in the bay. I dont think its struck through it at all. Looks like paint. Too dull to be mercury

Thanks for the responses. Daves Errors posted something similar on a zincoln not to long ago and He seemed pretty confident it was a mint error. Interesting that this anomaly is occurring in roughly the same area of the coin ie reverse and starts at top of rim running SE but probably just coincidence. http://goccf.com/t/384507I'm now leaning towards this being a planchet flaw. |

If the plating fell off the coin, then why is the affected areas showing low spots and higher spots, while showing the solder color? If the plating peel off, the zinc underneath would be below the plating. I'm seeing rises and lowered area like something was smeared over the coin. That is what I see.

I wonder if it could be something (uneven grease?) that was on the coin as it was plated and has since come off, taking the copper plating with it?
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.

Thanks Petespockets55 I believe this is on the right track. Pre-plating planchet flaw (debris) which mostly fell of quickly after plating but some pieces remained (the bay debris). Those pieces are perhaps zinc foil with some copper plating which got struck through? |

I suspect this is some surface contaminant. Note the short segment to the left of the final Memorial column where the zinc-colored strip is interrupted. The normal copper surface is exposed and there is no recess present. If it had been a struck in strip of zinc, you'd see a depression. Same thing if it was something deposited in the plating bath.

To me this looks similar to Rob0411's recent post on a 2011 D 1c. Could this be pre-strike planchet damage as well?
