Got this from an uncirculated Mint roll. There is pitting(?) poor strike at the center on the obverse and the reverse. I've tried to find explanation but can't find one. What is this?

Grease or oil with some grit mixed into it, leaving the surface affected with a rough texture. (I mentioned oil as I see no evidence of filled devices)

Thanks Coop! That was going to be my "best guess". Is it common for grease fills to show up on both sides of the coin?

Usually not, but when the machine was stop, if there were oil applied to the upper die, it could drip on the lower die. The die is still pretty fresh. Probably in the EMDS (Early-Mid-Die-State) So that is why all the devices are so fresh. The only wear I can see is the obverse is showing the very beginning hint of flow lines. So it would be a keeper coin.

Thanks guys. I'm more of a collector than a trader so I like to keep odd coins even if they are of no value. I'll keep this one!

I just read that light oil can sometimes get on both sides of the planchet as well.

Probably in that case, the oil would be smeared around the whole planchet. On your coin, the grit in the oil left the greatest alteration of the surface.

I've searched many halves. I've seen many of these, it's fairly common.

to the CCF!

I too think it's oil with debris (metal shavings) from the minting process. Here's a 2007-P Jefferson that's die clashed with eyes under the Monticello and a strong line from the base of the Monticello through Jefferson's eyes. It also has the same oil/debris as found on Parnelli917's Kennedy half, seen on Jefferson's nose, cheek and in the fields on the obverse.
