While searching boxes of quarters I came across a 1999 New York quarter that looks from the sides to be silver. I know San fransisco mints silver proofs but this looks like a regular business strike just no copper line on the side. Any ideas?

Thanks for the info! Is there any way to confirm if it is plated without ruining the coin?

@mfe, first welcome to CCF. Second, can you please post the weight of this quarter? Thx.

I find one similar every couple of months and save them. Most people I have asked believe they are plated, possibly by one of those companies that sells them on various shopping networks, but I still enjoy finding them. The first time I found one, it was also a 1999 date and I was convinced it was an off metal strike, and had all sorts of theories :D

Out of the roughly 20 I have saved, a few look OBVIOUSLY plated, while some honestly just look like some sort of mistake, lol.

So I weighed the coin and it weighs 5.76 grams, a little heavier than a regular modern quarter but lighter than a silver one. I am thinking it is indeed plated now. It looks like a really good plating job though #128515;
