Pulled this from a nickle roll yesterday and set it aside for a minute and showed off the other nickel I thought could be copper. Man I hope my pictures are good. I also hope I'm seeing this right.

@minn, you pics are fine and your instincts are pretty good. However, when we see nickels like this, it is much more likely to be environmental staining causing the copper color rather than an off-metal strike. How much does this nickel weigh?

Hey Spence I get the environmental damge, but it does not put a one cent on back. Nockel weighs 4.8 I will try and enhance a better pic for ya.

Unsure--are you saying ONE CENT is showing on the reverse?

Just environmental toning - perhaps buried for a time.

I do believe that reads 'FIVE CENTS' not 'ONE CENT' under the Monticello building

No not that Dearborn lol. Well I will settle with environmental. I will take it into St Louis when I take coins up to be sent off for grading. Thanks for your time. Will let you know if it was junk or copper.

I'll try this again....you are saying this is a copper planchet the nickel was struck on?
EDIT:The rims that have the most wear on them, compared to the rest of the coin, look pretty much silver in the pictures.

I have a very similar 1958, I'll have to look at it a bit later (and buy a scale to weigh it on). Likely environmental damage.

Copper nickel coins usually develop this sort of color after a period of in ground burial.

I do thank you for you replies I do understand you all are just looking at pictures and doing this on your time. How many times have you wished you could look at the coin in person? Thanks for your time.
