Perhaps Bobby was a hoplite (ancient Greek Spartan soldier) in an earlier life.
The iron bar would have been his money. The Spartans were among the last last of the ancient Greeks to adopt a normal coinage system. They used small iron bars - known as 'spits' instead.

The modern Mercury dime shows a bundle of iron spits tied together.
