I have a 1988 D penny. The color is off and it has silver where ever there is wear on it. As for the color it has a sparkle to it and is litter in color. More white then normal. No idea what this is. I feel it was stamped on the wrong planchet. "Not sure if that's spelled right." Any info would be great.

The coin may have been soaked in a mild acid like a soda, that comprised the plating on the coin. No premium for this because it was altered post strike. But always nice to know what happened to it.

Either what coop said or it has been plated. I came across one a while back that I swear was gold-plated and it looked a lot like that. Of course, even if it is that, the value would still be one cent.

Found the pics (coin in question on left):

I lean toward plating that is wearing off.

The reason I mention a "mild acid" is the small divits on the surface of the plating and some wearing off of the plating.

I've seen a few of these memorial cents over the years--with the slightly sparkly fields. Not a planchet error/mint error. Some external treatment or brief exposure to a 'corrosive/caustic' agent is responsible. Would be cool to see closer-in, high resolution photos. Some of the visual effect in the current images may be due in part to images being output at a low(er) .jpeg factor.

Zinc planchet shows silver when/where the copper plating is worn off. Copper coated zinc planchet = correct planchet.

Maybe someone tried to clean it in salt and vinegar and it was already shot. Just a guess.
