Going through my family's estate coins, I found a 1871 - P Seated Liberty half dollar. Can't figure out why someone would carve a deep and perfect X in the coin. Looks to be have done while still in circulation.

Is this something people would in back in the day to verify it being silver? Does this damage pretty much destroy any value to the coin?

Thanks in advance.

Shame. Does it have a mint mark on the reverse?

@Coinfrog no mint mark. So it's an assumed "P".

That would be considered "graffiti" - a form of damage that would definitely lower the value of the coin and take most of the collectible value out, especially since 1871-P is not a super scarce date/mint for that series.

I don't know why people would carve an X into a coin like that. I don't think it was to verify that it was silver - that's really the point of minting coinage with a specific design by the mint - i.e., not easy to duplicate.

The good news it is worth its value in silver so at a minimum it is worth $10 or so - maybe a bit more since there's probably still a little collectible value in it. It's maybe a $50-75 coin without the damage.

Could be a simple chop mark, possible the character for "7" or "10".
