Okay, after going through quite a lot of cents the past couple of weeks, I have run across dozens of 1979-D cents with filled/damaged mint marks. Not really a surprise since I live in Denver. LOL I ran across this
LMC last night and noticed it looked a bit different than all of the rest. First, I should say that I have been using the book "Strike It Rich With Pocket Change" 4th Edition by Ken Potter and Brian Allen. It shows a 1979-D
LMC with a doubled mint mark. The photo in the book looks exactly like all of the damaged 1979-D
LMC mint marks that I have seen. It does give a reference to Wexler as 1979-D WRPM /RPM 001, but I cannot find it on his website.
This is my confusion-- is there a way to tell a 1979-D
LMC mint mark that is doubled from a a 1979-D
LMC mint mark that is damaged? Is this book accurate or inaccurate? I cannot find any other references to a 1979-D
LMC doubled mint mark. Does a doubled mint mark even exist for this coin, or are they mostly all just damaged? Is the book using the term doubled when it should be using the term re-punched?
On to the coin I am showing-- I cannot tell if this is an RPM or
PMD. I have found photos of re-punched 1979-D
LMC mint marks, but none look like this. I am noticing what looks like
PMD coming down through the horizontal edge of the 7. I am wondering if this is
PMD and just continued down to damage the mint mark? So, is the book I am referencing misleading in some manner? Are there indeed three different versions of the mint mark for this coin-- doubled, damaged, and re-punched? Please help me to understand the 1979-D
LMC mint mark varieties better! Thanks!
