Looks like extra metal was wedged into the rim below the date. Any ideas what this is?

To me it looks like damage on that area. Possibly coin counter damage. Note how it follows the rim on that area? Also, note the trench, with raised edges?. That tell me that this happened after the strike.

Thanks for taking a look Coop. This cent comes from a mint sewn $50 bag so while it may be PMD (which I doubt) there is no way it is roll crimper damage. It almost has a MAD look to it with the defined ridge almost touching the bust but it affects such a small area that its probably not that either. Maybe a struck through Rim Fin?

Not a roll crimper damage, it is a coin counter damage issue. Possibly the coin got stuck in the machine. Thus the line the curves with the rim.

I tried looking up examples of coin counter damage and didn't find much. Do you have photo examples of that kind PMD Coop?

Possibly this is due to planchet debris?

No I don't. I was going by what I saw on your coin. The marks direction following the rim tells me it had to be mechanical as it was following that direction. Probably most machine damaged coins probably never make it back into circulation.

The area by the "0" doesn't look like a mechanical scrape. It almost looks like you can see the die flow lines in that extra material?

Do you see the wave pushing to the left? That is metal movement from something forcing in a direction that the strike would not have created. The area next to the rim should be almost a 90 degree angle upwards. Not pushed to the left.

Coop, I do see that material to the left of the rim but I see that as struck through and do believe you can see die flow lines going from field through that material. This area east of the date is a bit different from the area south of the date though. Without a clear example of "coin counter" damage to compare it to I do feel this is an unexplainable striking event. Of course I could be wrong.

Well, I found another one of these. Rules out PMD I'd say. Any ideas Coop?
