Hi Folks! This my first post and appreciate greatly your help:
I just received (2) two coins on ebay that came in a CCS vinyl folder that has open tops displaying the coins. The CCS certification states both coins are BU MS 60.
My concern is the fact that the coins are not sealed and specifically with the 1878 P (and 1921P) Morgan Silver Dollar(s). The seller said both coins were BU certified by CCS as BU but didn't state what was on the CCS folder when it arrived. I asked him prior to the sale what the CCS certification was and he advised. The actual certification states both both coins are MS60. I did not remove the coins but upon examination I discovered that the 1878 coin has a small black mark that looks like a magic marker pen mark or grease mark. How does that mark affect the MS60 BU certification? I can't see the reverse side of either coins without putting on new white cosmetic gloves. The seller didn't show the closeups of the coins nor the reverse sides at all. I am not making any accusations but I want to make sure I am not getting ripped off as this purchase is my first rodeo with antique US coins. Please advise with as much details and suggestions as you graciously can.
Thank you very much!
Best Regards,

to CCF. CCS is not known to me,most likely a so called "basement slabber". We need to see a few good photos of what you are talking about to really help you. The trusted graders are PCGS...NGC...ANACS

to the CCF!

The most accurate comment I can make without seeing a picture is:
Black from a marker pen would be easily and safely removed with acetone.
If the mark or spot remains, it is permanent, and the chemistry is most probably a silver oxide/chloride combination that is part of the coin's surface. Localized severe toning spot.

Pics would really help. Does he take returns?
I'd personally only buy graded coins from the
major TPGs (PCGS, NGC, ANACS ) I also would look at ICG.

If you can't post pictures of the coins in hand can you post the links to the auctions? That may be a bit helpful.

My guess is this is the ebay listing:

293989204303

As others have said, if you are not familiar with grading coins, I would only buy coins certified and graded by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. The certification and grade by Calhoun's Collectors Society is meaningless, and the photos are not good enough to say for sure that the coins are even uncirculated. Buying coins online without good photos of both obverse and reverse is not wise. He does accept returns if the coins are not removed, and you might want to consider that since the price seems pretty steep for those coins.
