Classic "slider" AU. A slightly mushy strike on the obverse is balanced by a nice reverse strike where the only hints are a little wear on the claws and eagle's beak, neck feathers and edges of the wings. AU, but a higher grade than the "average" collector would infer from looking at the obverse.
Dave, well put.I believe this is a classic AU coin, some small distracting marks, overall nice, original luster present in some places.WHAT HAPPENED TO HER NECK OR JUST BELOW THAT, it would appear there is a slice there, or maybe the light ?
I looked at this, but didn't post because I couldn't decide what was going on. I wasn't sure if it was just a weak strike on the obverse or what because the obverse really didn't match the reverse. Thank you Superdave for confirming what I suspected.
I'd call this AU-55 or so. There is very little wear, just loss of luster in the fields. Detail looks pretty good with the ear sharply defined and the breast feathers mostly distinct. The reverse retains more luster and if graded separately would be very close to mint state.
The long, diagonal cut on the neck is a minor distraction (it looks like a real mark, not just lighting to me!) but the cheek is quite smooth. Overall it has a nice look.
