1943 Steel Penny Error - Coin Community Forum

BizzyBonez Valued Member United States 72 Posts	Posted 03/06/2021 09:03 am So I'm fairly new to coin collecting and don't have much experience with error coins. From what I see this coin has got to be an error. It's certainly not hard to see what I'm referring to. My thing is I just don't know if this is considered a error or not. Would really appreciate any helpful feedback. I have uploaded pictures and circled in red the area I'm referring to. The "4" in the date is almost none existent like it was only partially stamped on the planchet. Then there is the mint mark which looks to be more then one letter on top of each other. Also if this is a error would anyone perhaps know what it might be worth. The condition is also flawless. It looks like it's never even been used once. Well thanks for any help. Ty2020b Pillar of the Community United States 4680 Posts	Posted 03/06/2021 09:23 am 1. Coin looks like it's been repurposed/plated , hence the "shiny, new" look. Sadly this kills, almost all remaining value. 2. The doubling that is seen is DDD ( Die Deterioration Doubling) caused by heavily worn dies. Does not add value, but a cool example. 3. The light 4 looks like a possible Greaser. Grease filled the 4 in the die during the minting process and when the coin was struck it allows less metal to flow into that portion of the die, causing that area to remain weak.
