Ok I'm still kind of new to this but I'm curious.... I've sorted through possibly hundreds of dollars of pennies and have them sorted by years. Given a choice of coins from 1950-1982, which bag would you look closest at foe varieties and errors?

The 4 killer finds in this span are the 1955, 1969-S, 1970-S, and 1972 DDO's.

I'd be remiss if I didn't add the 1982-D small date copper cent to the above list. Extremely unlikely you'll come across one, but hey, a few were found, so you never know!

I agree with the check them all crowd. There are simply too many rare varieties on Lincoln cents in this date range to give a comprehensive list here. Use wexler's die varieties and variety vista for reference as you go.

From 1950 to 1972 you have thousands of varieties and errors to look for. From 1973 to 1982, not so much. But I look for them all.

Wheat cents tend to be abundant with RPMs. Shield cents are pretty good for minor DDOs.

Start with the 1972P. Its the year that collectors work for a complete set, so even the more common doubled die in that date are important. Plus they are still out there to find.
