Looks like a cracked planchet to me. Oh man, when I saw that last picture I thought it was an x-ray of a broken vertebrae.

I'm surprised that the a coin with a really nice error like this shows this level of circulation. It makes me wonder if it was a pocket piece that a collector carried or something like that. Interesting coin!

Awesome cracked planchet! I love this type of error, especially examples as big as this.
