It's quite likely that Dr. Medad Smith Corey was the issuer of this TRY COREY'S OINTMENT counterstamp, pictured below. While this really has yet to be proven, there's strong, circumstantial evidence that bolsters this attribution. Here's what's known about Corey .... https://www.coinbooks.org/esylum_v18n23a15.html

This issue was listed in works by Brunk and Rulau. There are presently about twenty specimens known; all seen, having been punched on the obverses of Liberty Seated coins. The placement of these stamps may have been to subliminally imply that Lady Liberty's ability to sit was due to her application of Corey's Ointment; this, since it was used for the treatment of piles.

Here's an interesting backstory, or dare I say backside story, regarding Dr. Corey (The Fredonia Censor, NY, February 13, 1884) ....

Very cool counterstamp @exo!

@ih, looks like a trip to Tokyo might be in your future then (Meguro Parasitological Museum).

Neat counterstamp. Just out of curiosity, can you post a pic of the reverse? Thanks.

@ExoGuy, Another fascinating post! I love the combination of numismatics and historical research. Just for fun, I Googled his first name a few minutes ago while I was trapped on the phone. It looks like his daughters and grandchildren had the last name Sackett, and are buried just a few miles from where he lived. Maybe another clue?

EXO, if you like counterstamped coins, Stacks has a ton of them coming up for auction in the next couple of days.

@fortcollins .... Yes, I'm aware of the Sackett connection. So far, it's not proven to be much of a clue. Ironically, I lived in Fredonia for some years. It's a great little town, being home to the first Grange, the first gas well and home to the Women's Christian Temperance Union! Dr. Corey was into politics and strongly opposed the consumption of alcohol.

@jimbucks .... Thanks for the heads-up. What with the sales tax and buyer's fee, I find it's getting increasingly difficult to buy coins at auction. Earlier this month, I picked up two great c/s's at a show, paying about half of what they'd have cost in an auction.

Another TRY COREY'S OINTMENT counterstamp just closed on ebay. It realized about $200, given tax and postage. This 1854 quarter appears to have some surface damage, underlying the punchmarks. Since most of Corey's stamps are seen on quarters, that was likely the price of his ointment.

Here's an obverse pic of the "money side" ....

Auction prices on this issue have tended to hover around this value in recent years. While my attribution is supported by fairly strong circumstantial evidence, it's still not the slam-dunk that I ultimately seek. Patent medicine counterstamps usually fetch prices beyond common occupations like machinists and general blacksmiths. Then too, the more significant the attached history, the better the value.

Is this sort of thing typically in this price range, or is Corey's something special?

@Coinfrog .... These Corey-stamped quarters have typically been hovering at around $200 for a decent looking specimen. I've seen some different patent medicine counterstamps sell for far more. Then too, if this Corey c/s ever appears on say a Trade dollar or gold coin, such a piece would easily fetch a four-figure price.
