Wow! I wish that I had that thing! It looks to me that the pieces broke off from the planchet cracks post-mint.. I've never seen anything like it.

That's what it looks like to me too, or a Canadian beaver took a bite out of it.

Viper, You need that one for your cracked planchet collection.

I don't believe it's natural. Someone tried punching holes in it with a screwdriver. Look at leaf 13 - it has a dent, and it looks like another at leaf 3. Then look at the hole at the top. How could a triangular piece fall out if it's just cracks ? Impossible, it wouldn't come out. Leaf 1 has a dent and when you look at the other side, you can see that metal has been flattened down toward the head and towards the beads.
The other damage is the same except the instead of a hole, the pieces broke off. There's metal bent back and flattened against the A.

What ever it turns out to be real or fake its pretty impressive and defiantly a conversation piece for a 1859 DP9.

The pieces that are broken out follow large planchet cracks all the way through. Maybe, in hand, it looks different. I'm just going by what I see in a photo.

This it is a end of roll planchet crack. I do not thing was done in hand then on the striking time. In the highlight of the photo I circle the traces of strikes, which follow the border of crack. I think it is a well wish crack planchet to add to any collection.
