Ok I had this coin in my Whitman FOLDER for a long time.
As most know, I'm moving my collection from folders to Albums.
So, when I placed it in the album, (being very picky about orientation, the coin HAS to be perfectly straight in the hole. I turn the page over and the coin is not vertical. So I get it out and place it in my clear plastic 2x2. I placed it on a steel ruler and make sure that the word 'LIBERTY' is straight on the line on the ruler. turning it over I use "United States' the align the coin the the same line on the ruler. Look at the angle of the 2x2 in relation to the ruler.

Also, on the reverse the zinc plating looks like it is 'orange peeling'.

What do you all think?

Hey Dearborn. Looks like a slightly rotated die to me. As far as the reverse, I'm not sure. Looks like some type of pitting to me. I'm not that keen on steel cents (Unless its's a 1944 steelie.....lol)

Thanks Scuba1, funny thing is that I never would have noticed the rotation if not for placing it in an album to see both sides.

Just waiting on some others to see what they think of the orange peel effect I see.

With the look of the reverse, I feel this cent might have been re-plated...

" being perfectly straight.........." So how much time does it take you to staple a 2x2...? That's my pet pev...

Yes sir! Good eye on catching the die rotation. I'm sure someone will chime in on the orange peel. Good luck!

hehe.. seems like forever. I place the 2x2 as square and straight , then place the coin in and hover directly looking straight down and rotating the coin a bit at a time until 'Perfect' placement is achieved.

I hate when I get mint sets and find that a coin or 2 has rotated in the sealed plastic case.... bugs the garbage out of me.

It does look like an after mint plating and the rotation is not enough to be a keeper, IMHO.

Probably too late to ask; however, would be cool to post a photo of the coin with a mirror as a backdrop. That way, we'd get to see the obverse and reverse in the same image.

I tried to get a 'mirror' pic first, I just couldn't manage it with the tools I have available to me for that to do it properly. Besides with such a slight rotation, it may not even show in a pic like that. Trust me, I did not take a pic of the obverse, then remove the coin and rotate it a tiny bit then replace it before taking a pic of the reverse.

IF the coin IS a re-plate job, that would be disappointing. But I do like the rotation.

I ended up with a bunch of 1943 cents that looked like that reverse. Under the scope it showed the orange peel to actually be little bubbles in a coating of some sort that was quite hard to see. Would have looked fine if not for the bubbles. I tried acetone and it would not dissolve it. Threw the whole lot into the cull bag.
