OK, the VAM 44 is known in the community as "the King", but with the recent record sale of an 8TF VAM 14.11 (Wild Eye Spikes) for over $17K, that title may be suspect. Here's another 14.11 offered on ebay. It's in a GSA soft-pack and graded by NGC XF-45. This is going to be fun to watch. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...WA:IT&ih=019

I saw that the other night when I was looking for 1878 Morgans. the only thing I think that will hurt the auction is the starting bid, he should have probably just set a reserve and lowered the starting bid some to encourage bidding and just left the BIN all the way off

I have never seen before a "soft pack', this , with all the SCAMMERS AND FRAUD ABOUNDING, IMO, DOES LOOK TO INVITE PROBLEMS.How long has this type of a package been around?

I believe the gov. Sold the soft packs with the circulated morgans. I could be wrong.

the GSA soft pack has been around as long as all the other GSA Morgans have. This is definitely an easy target for counterfeiters and would be very easy to reproduce including the NGC label and encapsulation (for lack of a better word). I have never heard of anyone counterfeiting a soft pack but that doesn't mean they are not out there. The GSA soft pack were used on what they called problem coins. A problem coin was anything that wasn't uncirculated. Just as the way if the coinh had any toning at all it couldn't have the "Uncirculated" stamp on the hard packs, it didn't mean they were uncirculated it just meant they werent blast white like they were when they left the mint. These in the soft pack were coins that had been circulated but were still in the vault when they did their inventory and even though they didn't fit in the uncirculated holder or the ones that didn't include the uncirculated stamp they were still part of the GSA hoard (for lack of a better word)

I cant believe this style of "soft slab" lol, has been around and I have not seen it before this thread, thanks to all, MIKE PS: I have also learned that if a coin was toned, it could not be called an Uncirculated coin by some, that seems unjust because of the toning, which is a natural reaction from the elements to the coin. I love the toned look, some do not, again I did not know this...

Is there such a thing as an online price guide for VAMS?

CoinHunter, Not really a price guide available online. I joined SSDC (Society of Silver Dollar Collectors) and receive the quarterly VamView PDF file. It lists VAM prices realized during the past quarter from ebay, Teletrade, Heritage and VamQuest. Here's the listing for the VAM 14.11 I mentioned: 1878 8TF 14.11 55 PCGS Jun-08 E $17,190
