1996 D 10c Improperly Annealed? - Coin Community Forum

Going through pocket change I have found two 1996 D 10c coins that look in the same grade except for the tone. I don't believe the darker coin is a "buried" or damaged specimen so I wonder if this is an annealment issue. Same lighting was used on both coins. Note even in the fresh open roll they were noticed: These are so often faked, unless you open an original roll, they will probably be altered coins, like the one above. This change in hardness and ductility is a result of the reduction of dislocations in the crystal structure of the material being annealed. Why the TPG quote "improper annealing" ?!!? Mystery. Maybe just a marketing tool. Improper annealing at a strike of 60 to 90 tones in function of the coin metallic composition will normal crack the crystal structure. Report this Post to the Staff

silviosi Pillar of the Community Canada 6244 Posts	Posted 04/19/2021 5:39 pm Coop give the right answer. Me I do not see a problem of annealing. I see one coin from 1996 with grease struck. The rest are great. The change in color or shinny? Yes is happened due to the age and environment, but do not degrade the coin. I hate those who say not anymore mint shinny. Ok maybe but you are same like 40 years ago? , no . For more precision is: The annealing of the Nickels is done at 900 degrees. If it is improper annealing or faster cooling, the color is different.
