Super note! Can you compare the reverses of the two series (1890 and 1891) for us?

Just shut my scanner imaging stuff down... as we know the 1890 rev has the beautiful "partial watermelon look that the higher denoms use. The 1891 has the more typical sawback rev.

Correct, the star was used on several series during the 19th c. as a terminating design rather than a designation of a replacement note. The use of stars for replacement notes began around 1910 as I recall.
