Hi, I just picked up this 2002-D Kennedy 50¢ Copper Wash Error. I have never seen one before and thought it was pretty neat. Anyone have a good idea on the value of something like this? Or how rare ones like it are?

Cool coin. This is what error-ref.com says: Quote: Improper annealing (due to excessive heat, prolonged exposure to intense heat, or excessive oxygen in annealing oven) (replaces "sintered plating" and "copper wash") (ES July/Aug 2010; CW 11/30/09, 2/8/10) http://www.error-ref.com/part-v-planchet-errors/

Never come across anything like this. Interesting coin. Glad you got a slabbed version (for authenticity). Can't help with value.

Really Nice acquisition - so the improper annealing caused the planchet discoloration then was stuck by the dies, kinda like a "Black Beauty" nickel (?) - never saw that on a clad US coin before.

Ya that is why I bought it, a new one for me. The guy said they pulled it out of a mint sealed bag. and sent it to PCGS. I bought it and like it, just wasnt really sure of value of something like it. Closest I can find appears to be NGC missing clad layer coin 2 on ebay..

It has been a couple years since I posted this. Still have really never saw a similar one. And also no luck on what a good value for it would be.

Nice looking error. They are not called "Copper Wash" or "Sintered Planchet" errors anymore. Like the previous reply mentioned, these are "Improperly Annealed" planchet errors. Here is a similar quarter for sale on ebayhttps://www.ebay.com/itm/234115436505Not that the quarter will sell for that much but who knows. Here's a 1978 10c with this error. I bought this coin for $11. http://goccf.com/t/419128&SearchTerms=1978

Ya I completely missed the "Improperly Annealed" planchet errors. Name change. Probably why I was having no luck tracking a similar one down. Thanks for replies. Should sell it, but I kinda like it.
