So I have $100 dollars to spend at a local coin shop.
I would like to spend it on one coin - potentially a slabbed coin.

I know this is very vague, I'm open to most anything. Suggestions?
What would you get/look for if you had a $100 to spend?

THANKS!

You posted this under classic coins, so I'm assuming you're looking for something a bit older?

For EAC you could get a nice choice VF Braided Hair Half Cent, or XF Braided Hair Large Cent. If you'd accept something a bit lower grade, you could get a nice G6 1804 Draped Bust Half Cent. Sticking with copper you could get a choice AU-58 2 Cent for $100. It could also get you a VF-35 Classic Head Half Cent. If you like small cents, you could get a MS-65BN Indian cent for that price, or a VF-35 Flying Eagle.

If you're looking for an unusual coin a choice VF/XF 3 Cent Silver costs about $100, and an AU-58 3 Cent Nickel costs the same. Sticking with odd denoms, $100 could get you an AU-50 Seated half dime, or a G4 20 Cent.

If you like more classic coins, that amount could get you an AU-55 Seated dime, or a F-15 Capped Bust Dime or Half Dollar.

If higher grades are your thing $100 would get you a MS-65 Walking Liberty half.

If none of those are your taste, you could go after an AU-55 Standing Liberty quarter or a choice XF-45 Barber quarter.

If you're a silver dollars guy, that budget would get you a nice MS-64 Morgan or Peace, or a MS-62PL Morgan dollar if you're a fan of those.

Or if you're a nickels guy, that could get you a VF-20 1866 Rays Nickel, or AU-50 1882 without Rays. If you like Buffalos that could get you a very high end MS-66 with $30 to spare, or a MS-64 1913 Type 1. Lastly if you're a V-Nickel person, that could get you either a MS-63 No Cents, or an AU-58 with Cents example.

Did I list more options then necessary? Yep. But I prefer to let you know all the options you have available.

Ill see your vague question and raise you a general answer . Whatever floats your boat. Whatever strikes your fancy.......

What do you collect? Moderns, silver, copper? Building any sets or filling any albums? If it was me, personally, I wouldn't go for a slabbed example at that price point unless your dead set on purchasing slabbed. Hunt around, see what this dealer has to offer, find a deal. If there's a hole in an album, or several holes, fill them. You don't have to have a game plan, go in there and take a good look and see if something stands out, if it does, buy it. But don't feel the need to buy something just bc you have the gift certificate. If you don't see anything, hold out for another visit. I've gone into my LCS many times and walked out empty handed. Hold out for what suits you.

Grape covered pretty much all the bases, a lot of very nice potential selections!

Theres one more I'd like to suggest though, for $100 you should be able to get an XF 1854 Seated quarter with arrows, I really like the arrows because they have some interesting history to them. https://www.PCGS.com/news/why-do-so...-by-the-date

And I think the quarter is a good size for the seated design.

Grape gave a lot of good suggestions. IMO everyone is after their own qualities in a coin so it may just be something that speaks to you. Look around and find something that makes you smile!

Well if there's nothing your need collector coin wise , you might want to throw the whole $100 on Bullion Silver . Nothing with a premium though , maybe common generic one once bars or 90% junk Silver . Then there's coin supplies ,books , albums , 2x2 's ,etc . You have many options .

Books, you can never have enough books in my opinion, of course lately in my case a $100 would only get me a deposit on most of the books I've been buying. LOL

Since it it 'free' money, buy something interesting to you that might normally not have considered.

If it was me, I would go with the suggestion someone made about silver bullion. Here's why: Its value is determined by the market price of silver as opposed to a coin's value according to the whims of the collector market -- which is rather subjective, and instances over the years of collector values on any collectible, not just coins, crashing are many. And even there, the *true and real* value of any silver coin is its melt value -- and that goes back to the narket value of silver at the monent.

So there ya go. Probably not a popular answer or one you might've been looking for, but there ya go.
