Thinking of getting this one but not sure of the grade. Would appreciate any opinions. Also looking at the mint mark. Is that mint error or PMD?

I'll lead off with MS-64. More light on the right obverse field would help.

I will say MS-63 I think there are more marks in the light area in front of the face , the darker area behind her head shows quite a few. Also good sized scratch going north and south through the ear and hair

The coin is not showing a lot of luster in photos, and a little rub on cheek and neck. There are white spots on reverse that appear to be from an old dip. Looks like the C took a little hit. The coin is showing very few marks, but I am at MS62 because of lack of luster.

This is an expensive coin in Mint State and can get close to $300 in AU. In MS65 you're at $1500. No way I'd pay more than $300 from those images.

Here's an example of an AU58 that brought $300 last winter. https://coins.ha.com/itm/morgan-dol...ption-071515
It looks every bit as good as the OP's images.

It has the surface presentation of a near PL coin, very frosty devices. But I'm seeing absolutely zero luster on it, something seems off. Are these scans?

The previous pix were provided by the seller. Here are two more of the same coin by the same seller. As shown, it is ms61. I had thought it was ms63 or 64 and was interested in opinions before making a commitment to buy given the asking price.

please wait at least 24 hrs to post grade. thanks

the 78(CC) are typically sharp and bold. this one falls short on strike with the flatness of the hair around the ear and breast. as stated there is missing luster (based on photos) on both sides. multiple little marks particularly on the obverse and one long one from LIBERTY to the ear. I would put eye appeal at AVG-. my grade was MS62. I didnt think there was enough scratches etc on both sides to warrant a 61.

I'd be around MS-62 for this one. A nice coin but the luster is somewhat dull and impaired.

PCGS lists the coin at $385 for a MS61. I would not pay over that amount, and my first offer would start below the $385 amount. The seller's best offer asking price is way too high in the MS63 range. The general rule with buying coins in a TPG holder is negotiate price from the grade on the holder.

No sense trying to second-guess PCGS for one point. It stands as a 61.

The coin is somewhat proof like, but as said earlier it looks "dead": almost no luster.
Perhaps spend your money on a nice AU58 example? I have become somewhat of a fan of that grade level.
But if you want to spend the $$$, go at least for a real MS63 PL.

Thanks guys for your responses. Some very interesting. I had made the seller an offer above the PCGS valuation and he would not even negotiate. In any case, saved myself some money. Got me thinking about the AU categories as a couple of you mentioned.

This seller is asking almost $500 (MS64 money) for a coin that is properly graded as a MS61 worth $350 imo. You did well by not buying this coin. No way it's worth over PCGS' Price Guide value of $385.
