PCGS - PCGS is now grading officially licensed medals from the Walt Disney Company. While PCGS has always and continues to certify coins featuring Walt Disney properties and characters, this has been expanded to include medals or "rounds." Several companies and private mints such as Rarities Mint, Liberty Mint, and Kirk & Sons, over the years have produced collectible issues that were sold to collectors or as souvenirs in theme parks. These medals were typically produced in metallic compositions of silver and gold and are now eligible for certification at PCGS, along with the official coinage already certified by PCGS and the Disney Dollars certified by PCGS Banknote. 1986-1987-RM (Rarities Mint) 1oz Silver Mickey's Holiday Treasures First Edition PCGS SP68Disney items have long been popular collectibles, and these medals are no exception. The issues from the Rarities Mint in the 1980s became a hot commodity all to themselves with the collectibles firm offering full-page advertisements for dealers to become an exclusive dealer to sell the Rarities Mint medals in coin publications expressly aimed at dealer readership. Rarities Mint issues, such as Mickey's Holiday Treasures and the 50th Anniversary of Snow White, soon commanded large premiums and in 1987 were being traded on a digital dealer-to-dealer sales network alongside PCGS-graded coins and Chinese Panda coins. 2005 5oz Silver Hong Kong Disneyland Grand Opening PCGS MS69PCGS has always certified coins and government mint issues of medals, including those struck by Japan and China, but this expansion of service will include these official private mint issues. Recently, there has been an increased collector demand for such issues and several requests and submissions of these items to PCGS. Following these trends, PCGS has now officially accepted them and soon will include a census and other online resources as they develop. Check out Disney Medals on ebay.

That is very interesting. Being a family of Disney nuts, I will have to be on the lookout for these at the coin shows (if I ever get back to one) or on ebay. I have seen some medals before, but having them slabbed would be rather cool.

Can't wait for certification/grading of drink coasters from Disney dining venues.

What is the difference between an "official" private mint issue and an "unofficial" one?
I could form a corporation today and issue a medal with my logo or whatever tomorrow. In my mind that is as "official" as Disney issuing a medal. Would PCGS certify my medal?

However, I doubt a one-off private medal would make the "grade."

This 'expansion' would be consistent with PCGS' stated intention to bring more services and value to collectors. Wonder when vintage fruit crate labels will be certified/graded and slabbed?

Yeah, I'm done with it. I thought it might genuinely interest some, but apparently the people crapping all over it have won out.
