Just wondering:
can the Blakesley Effect be faked?

I was just thinking that it could be easily done to make a fake clip error look genuine

Not likely, but there is no absolute answer to this question. Coins would have to be evaluated individually.

I would imagine it would take a lot of effort and expensive tools to fake accurately enough to fool an expert, if it could even be done, so probably would never happen considering clipped planchets aren't worth enough to make it worth while.

Yes. In some cases. Straight clips often have subtle Blakesley Effects. That is why the rims dovetailing into the clips are the first thing I look for.

I don't see why not - just tap the rim in the proper area with a Jeweler's hammer. And I don't think the error fakers are out to fool "Experts", I imagine they would be more of sellers to the uninformed collectors like on ebay, Etsy, etc... - less chance of having coins returned for a refund that way.

@roth, if you have the time, I'd be interested to see what you can do. I'm not convinced it is as easy as you are thinking.

I doubt it, excess metal will be push out around the rim area. It did become non-uniform.

I don't know about making the actual clip because I don't have a hydraulic press but I'll attempt to match some coins I have with the Blakesley Effect present. I'll try to get out to the shop sometime this week and give it a go.....

Sometimes the affect can only be seen on one side. I feel on these the blank rises a bit during the process and it only affects one side of the planchet. (Note the words, blank
Fake-Blakesley-Effect
and planchet in this sentence? A blank is the cut metal,
Fake-Blakesley-Effect
the upset process turns this into a planchet)
