As Mike recently mentioned, it isn't what I thought was Machine Doubling. But take a look at this coin. Note the direction of the split plating. If it were caused by Machine Doubling we would see the same dies of the devices affected. But looking at this coin, I now realize it is from the strike pressure. Note the tops on the USA are all affected towards the rim. Also the right side of the building is affected and possibly the left side. So I've changed my way of view this. This is from the strike, and not from Machine Doubling. There is not single/double direction that is affected, but the push from the center outwards, tell me now, it is strike pressure. http://www.error-ref.com/?s=split+plating
