Just looking through an old childhood collection and noticed that the Half Dollar in question appears to be miscast. Is this a common error or is it something worth noting?

Just curious, any help is welcome! Thanks!

Not sure what you are seeing? If you are seeing a halo around the head, that is from die polishing. No premium for this.

Hey, Richard, thanks for responding! I've edited my post to try to be clearer, but I can elaborate. On this specific coin, there is a raised edge beginning just left of the bottom of "In God" and ending to the right of the "T" in Liberty. It appears the top right edge of the coin is about a mm or two shy as well. It really looks like it was stamped just a bit off center. I'd never heard of anything like it, having done only a bit of coin collecting as a child and knowing about some basic missing letters or double printing errors. Is this unusual?

It maybe an issue called MAD. That means the hammer die was not aligned correctly with the reverse die. Thus creating a wider and narrow affect on the rim. These are collectable when the devices fall over the edge of of the coin as the rim is not located correctly:

Note on this one the miss alignment causes a weakness of the reverse devices as the strike pressure not not centered over this area. So a lot clearer image might show me more of what is going on. Just going on the clues I see so far. (The sad part if that it could also be something else, that I'm not seeing)

Borrowed a phone to get this photo, but I think it's what Richard said! Thanks guys! I'm gonna have a bunch of learning to do; my aunt found my collection and my dad passed his on recently, so I have a lot to go through.

If it is a MAD, then shouldn't part of the top of the coin be cut off (top of Liberty would be missing because the die was over empty space). See Coop's example cent, where the top is missing.

CuriousCoinGuy, do you have another half dollar you can compare and see if this coin is wider than it is suppose to be.

Well with the better image, it looks more like a tilted die strike. Where the fin should be it has flattened some, But that is what the better image is showing me now.

The US doesn't cast coins, they're struck. Almost no modern coins (if any) are cast to my knowledge.

Thanks for the welcome, guys! I've got about a shoebox of my own stuff to go through and a suitcase of my dad's. My dad's collection is more either graded coins in the square things or proof / memorial sets, whereas I just worked at retail and collected interesting things from the registers. Cashiers would let me know and I'd pay for the coins in newer cash.

And yeah, I'd compared it to another half dollar when I noticed the e difference. I have something like 25 of those half dollars I'd collected from the register method.

Casting a coin is a counterfeit trick. How can you tell if a coin has been cast? You look for the sand grains:

Note the rough fields on this cast coin. And the reeds are a terrible fake.

Wrong metal is the first clue on these.
