Hey I don't think it's an error is see it fairly often on coins but iv been wondering what it is or what causes it

Die Deterioration, extremely common on the 5 cent, 10 cent and 25 cent coins minted for 2001, its almost impossible finding one without showing this extent of Die Deterioration. Some have also called them "deterioration lines" because they typically go from the device right to the rim in random spurts of lines around the whole obverse and reverse.

Just guessing here:struck through thin layer of oil. Don't think it is a trail die issue. John1

Quote: could it also be die trails? Nope. Die Trails are something completely different. Note that most Die Deterioration is radial in fashion, directly towards the rim. You can see these same features going back to the late 1930s, before they started chrome plating the dies (this is a 1940 cent).

I see it a fair bit some times more then other's, I think conditioning may play a big part because I see it on newer coins as well even 2020
