Yes that would be my first guess. Looks like something very sharp and thin like a razor blade.

Yes. Sorry. 1996 D. I just looked up spiked heads and it looks like it has to come from the rim in. Would that be right?

Is the linear feature fully raised, or sunken (incuse)?

Note the trench on that area is flat. (Sometimes you can even see striation lines from the blade) When a coin cut the metal forms a wall on each side of the trench, like this:  Some will think, this is raised, but the mark is incuse, the metal filings are raised. Just like after a new snow, any activity, leaves incuse marks on the snow. When you move snow to a new location, then it rises because it is not longer a new surface. Same on a coin if the die had a crack in it, it would rise and the crack would be raised. But on a coin scratch, then the metal is moved making an incuse mark, with the metal showing on the outside edges of the trench. That is the difference between a die crack and a scratch on a coin. |
