What are these pennies some kind of garage experiment or something.they weigh 2.5 like a regular penny would of those years there just bigger

Those are call Texas cents. They are altered cents that are squeezed and the plating falls off of them. Just a damaged coin now.

This coin was placed between two layers of leather (old belt maybe?) and hammered. That caused the copper plating to separate an increased the diameter of the coin. Sometimes the copper plating is heavy enough to stretch with the expansion of the zinc.

These are interesting, but don't have a value above face. If they continue to circulate, they will most likely be returned to the mint to be cancelled and recycled.
