BUt I have a dollar in bronze which was in a very big collection with many rare pieces. It has been mounted and the edge is ribbed. I hope it is a first strike and it seems strange that it would be a forgery even though the changes are high. kbbpll Pillar of the Community United States 4233 Posts	Posted 06/27/2021 12:15 pm There are some $20 pattern coins in copper from that era (search Heritage archives for "$20 pattern"), but I can't think of any reason a trial or pattern coin would be struck with a mint mark. A branch mint wouldn't be messing around making their own off-metal planchets, etc. For that reason I'd have to say counterfeit or replica, maybe specifically for a jewelry piece. Obviously the weight is quite low - a regular double eagle is 33.44g. Is there any evidence that it was once gold plated? Report this Post to the Staff

Slider23 Pillar of the Community United States 4468 Posts	Posted 06/27/2021 12:49 pm William Barber designed a $50 gold pattern in 1877 with a similar design. Here's another 1882-S copper double eagle contemporary counterfeit, with some of the gold plating still intact. There's some verdigris on Liberty's hair. Finding another one pretty much rules out this being a mint trial, but it no doubt has collector value. You'll have to google it. imgur links aren't permitted.
