...with a 1909S VDB, GIVEN to me by my LCS!

So what big service did I give to merit such a gem? Sadly, it was a fake. It was given to my LCS by one of them customers, who bought it from China for $2. The Chinese company was so grateful they sent him 5 1909S VDB cents, not one.

This gives us an idea how much it costs to make a fake.

It was not a bad one, but it had a grainy surface, among other things.

Into my "black" book it goes.

Nicely done and I like the idea of a "black book" for nefarious examples.
(I wonder if the Chinese have "Snidely Whiplash" as their frontman in Canada?)

i don't think I've ever seen a fake 09-S VDB, I've never bothered to look. as I look at this one, a couple things strike me right away.

-coin is in far too good condition.
-coin has a weird pattern in the metal (i assume it's made of metal; I wonder what it weighs) not too dissimilar from the various wood grain-like patterns we used to see on wheat cents.. so seeing this oddly speckled coin with such sharp features & little to no wear is a red flag.

and what about the mint mark? is it the right size & shape & positioned correctly?

@mrpink The counterfeit s vdb would resemble a true one. I believe the this one is a 1909 vdb with an added mm. Also a s vdb is uncommon in grades under ef45 due to that they were picked out of circulation fast. I don't see a correct mm position or the correct mm. The pattern is most likely something of a woody type. Just my opinion. It is a good quality counterfeit. Definitely not a one look.

As promised, here are pictures of the 1909S VDB fake

It has a cleaned look to it, and looks a bit worn and grainy.
I would be interested to hear your opinions on other attributes of its fakeness.

wow, lots of little things about that one disturb my eye. amazing how your eyes get trained to see things on/about certain coins. when you look at these things day after day after day your eye picks up on things about the coin in question that do not look right. I try explaining to ppl when the question of 'how do you see that?' comes up.

thanks for posting that, oriole.

@oldfordman-

ahh, I read that bit & didn't get it right away. that's BadThad's VDB; the VDB coin itself is genuine, but the MM has been added post-mint, rendering the coin a counterfeit S VDB? am I understanding that correctly? yeah, it looks like a woody to me, too, so now am just wondering if that, too, is a fake or authentic woody.
