I am a big fan of Morgan dollars but I tend to overestimate their grades. I was wondering if I could get some opinions on this one. Grade? Cleaned? DMPL Thanks in advance -J *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

tough to judge based off these. I will say, the haloing around the devices raises a bit of suspicion on surface originality.

Too much flashback. Better pics needed to evaluate surfaces. to the CCF!

All the vertical scratches in the fields make me sad.

This is a common date in high grade. If you are thinking about buying it, I would stick with one already in a TPG holder. Otherwise, it's pot luck.

I took the photos and reprocessed them in Photoshop for a quick look with less glare. Here is what I come up with, not as good as re-shooting them, or working with raw files, but adequate enough, I think. I also straightened them slightly. I think MS-63 not DMPL and probably not even PL from a top tier TPG like PCGS or NGS, the reverse doesn't have the contrast to make a PL the Obverse may, but both side must show it, especially 1880-S & 1881-S dates as these two are found often with very deep mirror surfaces and heavily frosted devices.

Thanks everyone whos weighed in so far. I will reshoot the pics and post them this evening.
I own the coin and got it at what I thought was a reasonable price, about $50.00. I'm getting a shipment ready to send to PCGS and trying to figure out which ones are worth having slabbed.

At $50 in today's market it's not a bad deal, but I still don't think it's worthy of a slabbing, the fees will amount to almost that much alone, meaning the coin (literally the most common Morgan dollar) needs to double in price just to ever break even. That is unless they say its a DMPL or MS65 or better. Just my Two Cents worth of opinion.
