Now and then we hear about boxes containing rolls that are 100% one date/one mint. Like a box of 2019 D US quarters, or 2020 P Lincoln cents. You get the idea.
The other day I picked up several rolls of quarters at my bank. The teller broke open a new box in front of me and said "they all look new, from 2020". I glanced at the rolls and the ends looked mint-fresh, with a few 2020s showing. When I got home I opened them and found 3 to 4 older coins mixed in with each roll. That didn't surprise me because I've had the same experience for many years--rolls out of 'new' boxes looking for certain like solid dates/mint, but actually having a few older coins sprinkled in.
So, it would seem that what appear to be solid rolls from solid boxes may not always be 'solid'. Causes one to wonder about solid, unopened rolls we stash away--how solid are they? What have others found? Edited by ijn1944 07/08/2021 09:04 am

I weigh mine. I have gotten boxes like yours. It is not always foolproof but it is better than nothing.

Interesting! Makes me wonder if your recent experience was an anomaly or more common than previously thought. The last box of quarters I got was 100% 2021-D Alabama's (or so I think). I only opened ONE roll to get the five quarters for my five ATB sets. I swapped out most of the remaining rolls for other quarter rolls or cash, and still have nine rolls left I haven't touched. I was just getting ready to sell all the quarters I've got left to my former retail store to use (they told me they are having trouble getting coinage for change); should I check them out first?

It's an interesting conundrum. Of the multitudes of quarter rolls considered new and solid date that I've checked (drawn from what appeared to be 'solid' boxes), around 75% have been solid, the remaining 25% having just a few non-solid coins sprinkled in. Several years ago I spot-checked my stash of purportedly solid cent rolls (from boxes) and found a small number having a few older cents included.
Certainly, solid boxes do exist, but I think some collectors/hoarders would be surprised to find some rolls not so solid. Only speaking from my experience.

The only rolls that I'd trust to be solid are mint rolls.

Hello everyone, I have nothing good to report since my bank has been limiting or not letting me have any rolls of anything at all. Early this week I made a drop at the bank that took me 2 weeks to obtain by going all the branches in the area. I turned in $20 pennies, 30 in nickels, 30 in quarters & 20 in halves which I ran through the banks coin counting machine. The teller told me that they are also limiting commercial customers due to the continuing shortage.

Something I forgot. After the bank I stopped at the grocery store & used cash & I got back in change 3 Washington Crossing the Delaware quarters. There is some joy in Mudville.

Great job on the quarters! I hope your coin shortage situation will resolve itself. Wish some of you guys could get coins at my banks. Only one of them has ever told me of a coin shortage.
