In addition to my collection of US coins, I have an accumulation (hoard?) of world coins. Some I know of because they followed my family as we immigrated from Russia to the US. Others ame from our travels afterward while even more came as gifts from relatives who came before us and after us and started traveling freely. I thought it would be fun to share these coins with the forum and see what we can learn about them. Here is my first world coin picture. I have no idea which is the front and which is the back of the coin so I took a guess. http://www.geocities.com/christian_...n_coin_f.jpghttp://www.geocities.com/christian_...n_coin_b.jpgIf I had to guess I would say it's Chinese and it's made of copper. The edges are reeded. I have two of them. The other has something like black enamel on the edge so it's not very photogenic. Can anyone help? -- Boris

This is a Japanese 10 Yen coin dated Showa 25th Year, (1951) Y#73.

That is very cool! How were you able to translate the year? I'm assuming that the year is under the "10".

I have to disagree with echizento. It's showa 29 and therefore is 1954.

1954 is what it looks like to me...the second symbol from the right is a 9, so 29 added to 1925 = 1954

As you can see in gxseries' link (which also has a good numeral translation section), Japanese coins are dated according to the regnal year of the current emperor. On your coin, there are six Japanese characters below the numeral "10". These are, from left to right, Sho Wa (the reign-name of Emperor Hirohito) 2 10 9 Year; thus 29th Year of the Showa Era, which equates to 1954 AD.

Greetings - I'm new to all of this thanks to my son's developing a desire to collect. He has several of these -- Does anyone know the value of the one shown?
Also, we don't know the years of these. Is there somewhere I can find how to translate them or do I need to post each for someone to look at for me? Thanks!! Tracy

tkl1102 - welcome to coincommunity Please post some picture and we'll do our best to identify them. Most modern Japanese coins struck after the late 1960s are normally worth their face value though unless in really nice UNC condition but we'll see.
