Did PCGS always designate distinctions like double die on the labels? I have an OGH PCGS 1927 Peace dollar MS 63 with clear doubling on the tiara Ray's and lettering in the ERT of liberty. I suspect it's Machine Doubling but hard for me to tell. I'm new here but will try to load a good photo.
Did PCGS always denote DD or did it come later?

To your main question I am not to sure, but I looked on vamworld.com to pin this VAM as a likely vam-2. Others hopefully will chime in more about you main question.

PCGS has always had a small list of varieties they attribute for free (1955 DD US Cent for example) and a larger list of varieties they attribute for an extra fee. No fee, no attribution.

There is a still larger non-list of varieties they don't attribute.

In regards to PCGS and VAMs, They will usually only attribute
the T100, Hit list 20, Elite 50, etc.
