Alright, my favorite this morning is "blast white." Why "blast?" Are there other kinds of white? Also, is it really white? I don't think so. Perhaps "blast silvery" would be more accurate. Sorry, just feeling oppositional today. I'm cranky. I'm 70. I get to be.

A white coin can have bright blistering luster (blast), creamy luster, silky luster, satiny luster, mute luster; because of that we use many different descriptors.

I kinda love "blast white - it's probably been around longer, but I first remember seeing it in J.H. Kline's ads for Standing Liberty quarters.

Some dealers get a bit carried away with their descriptors - one large online dealer I do infrequent business with seems to label most of their mint-state coins as having "incredible mint luster", "very strong strike", "nearly mark-free surfaces", and for silver, "blast white". Oh, and they're very fond of using "PQ!!!", as well. Funny thing is, they generally have good quality hi-res photos and you can often see that none of those things are really true...

Yeah, coin/numismatic lingo can be quite ambiguous, and interesting too. Much of the lingo has been passed (lovingly?) from generation to generation. Terms like 'devices', 'fields', 'flip', etc.

Fresh from BU roll. Wouldn't want to buy a stale coin, would we?

If I see "unsearched hoard" one more time, I'll have half a mind to never buy from that dealer / auction house/ company ever again.

Rare has to be the most over used descriptor.

Quote: "Estate sale" I have noticed a lot of ebay listings with "estate find" or something similar in the title lately. I assume they are trying to attract buyers, but it does the opposite for me. I usually don't even look at the listing if I see "estate" in the title.

Quote: Are there other kinds of white? my 2 cents (from a former paint/ colour consultant) fyi, white is considered a neutral and can exhibit every colour while still being classified white. to me, "blast" implies being "very" of something i.e mint blast, fruit blast. I don't mind this but i'll decide the white I see. anything overly descriptive might make the bs easier to smell. nose up

I've always been bothered anytime I hear "dripping with luster"
Makes my skin crawl, most unpleasant descriptor I could possibly think of
