Hi,

This is probably a silly question, but I was curious what could have caused this kind of damage and made it a "BERTY" coin It weighs 2.8g

This is commonly called a " Dryer Coin" - what happens when a coin get's trapped in a dryer, usually commercial, and tumbled for hours if not days and weeks under heat, the rim will flatten out (like a tire on a car going flat), the coin will shrink slightly in size. CCF member Earle42 made a great post explaining it well with illustrations and images back in 2013, see the link below:

I does look like someone may have used a grinder or a file to chop areas down as coinfrog states. Could be a combination of both.

People ( mainly kids I suppose ) used to grind cents down to make them the size of a dime to use in slot machines.
