Among other things, coin related, I collect mint and proof sets.I have been use to receiving in some sets one plastic sheet of coins, later it went to 2- sheet sets, Denver set and Philly set, with the extra cent from San Francisco, my concern is that the 1958 mint set, I have never seen this type before, it comes with a total of 20-coins, 10-per cardboard slab, 2-slabs, covered in a green paper like material. Each slab has 2 of every coin, 2-Halves, 2- Quarters, 2- Nickels, 2-Dimes, 2-LW Cents, per slab, all from the same mint on each slab.I love the set 1-slab from Denver and the other from Philly. My concern is that I did not notice the (not so nice toning) that is going on.This is the only set I own of this type and am not sure what to do as of now, if anything!
I will never let it or them go and am looking for advice on how to conserve and store these sets. I have not encountered this before being the only set(s) I have in this type of "holder", all other's are in plastic wrappers, any advice would be very appreciated, do not get me wrong, I love toning but this is a different type and color of toning and I am concerned that being the sets are 50-years old, what will they look like in another 20+ years, unless I can at least stop or slow down the process. I believe this "holder and the paper" might be an aid to this problem.I would also say the coins are in very, very nice shape and the toning from coin to coin differs, the coins that really concern me are the silver ones, Franklin's, Quarter's, dime's. I will put up photo's asap, thanks to all in advance, Mike...

i cant give advice on the storage of the set but I do know that the mint sets in the cardboard holders are always going to be toned because of the way they were packaged. but I would love to see pics of the set

Your 1958 set IS normal. That was the way they were packaged before 1959, double sets in the cardboard and paper holders. LEAVE THE COINS IN THE HOLDER. I would agree that the toning the coins get in these holders is to me unattractive, but many people DO like it and it is somewhat unique to those holders and collectors use that "mint set toning" pattern to make sure the coins have not been cherry picked and had coins swapped out of the set.

Yes, over time the coins will probably continue to tone but it can be greatly slowed by storage in a cool dry environment. So keep them in a tupperware or ziplock bag with some silica gel to keep the humidity down and store them somewhere where the temperature is moderate and not subject to larg swings in temperature.

Thanks, guys, for all your input. Upon further inspection of these sets, I found on one set a die break that is almost completely around the perimeter of the coin; and being there's two (Franklins), both have identical die breaks in them. This is something I've never seen before in a mint set. I'm quite thrilled by it, it be honest with you. Excited to see the exact same die break in one government original holder mint set. Check out the stamp from the post office on the envelope. Is that cool or what ?

Thanks again,
Mike

Scott, thanks for your kind words, I have not seen a set like it before this one myself, and it has been in storage for a long time. Just think that this is what was offered then as a mint set, compared to the sets we receive today, be well, Mike...
PS: I will try to get the microscope pictures of the FRANKLIN die breaks ...
