In the recent collection I got there were a dozen or so Dansco books witch were complete. Including, for example 2 books with all 1932 Quarter marks to start. There were also 2 "Mercury" dime books. One was missing just the 1916-D and the other is complete. These are the best pics of the 1916-d. I have no idea how it was decided this was a D. I can't see it. I also believe the collector was far more informed than I am so I didn't want to disregard his assessment. I'd love to know what you think. I can add more pics if needed. I'm not asking anyone to authenticate it. I'm just wondering if you see anything that leads you to believe a mint mark is there - either real or fake. Thanks in advance.

Wishful thinking? Pic is a little blurry on my phone, but I see no evidence of the fabled D mintmark.
Could we get a peek at the obverse, too?

Thanks. Still not seeing incontrovertible evidence that it's a genuine 1916-D, or any evidence at all. Maybe the original collector was tricked by the little open space near where the D should be?

1916-D Mercury dimes at this level of wear typically still show the D pretty clearly. This looks like a case of wishful thinking on the part of the previous owner. Could be wrong, of course!

I don't see a D mintmark anywhere near, or on, this coin.

I don't even see a mint mark. I would say even if it was a D in that condition, if you cant identify the mint mark then its not a 1916 D. I'm no pro, but I would not believe it if I didn't see it.

Many people put a similar coin in the slot for coins such as the 16D. Not necessarily to fool anyone but just to show an almost complete set.

John. I'm just doing it with my IPhone. I have some cool varieties I'd like to show. Should I try photographing in a different way?

If you have a USB microscope or a nice camera with macro play around with them. In fact play around with everything you got check your photo abilities.
