How do you tell the difference if their unmarked? This one looks different then most of the other ones, excluding a few S ones I have... it looks like those ones... any way to really tell?

Your 1965 Nickel is a Phildelphia. Only the Denver and the San Francisco were marked to the lower right of the Monticello mansion. Have fun and nice pics.

to the CCF!

While the answer that allcoinsaregood gave above would normally be correct, it doesn't apply to coins struck in 1965. Your coin may have been struck at any of the US mints. During 1965, 1966 and 1967, no US coins were struck with mint marks. The Coinage Act of 1965 stopped the use of mint marks to try to discourage coin collecting. This was partly caused by a huge coin shortage, due to hoarding, in the mid-sixties when the US moved from 90% silver to cupronickel clad coins. Mint marks were added back to US minted coins in 1968.

Concerning the accuracy of your title, there were no proof nickels struck in 1965. However, Special Mint Sets were produced for collectors. It is possible your nickel was cracked out of the packaging. The finish on the early 1965 SMS coins was satiny or semi-brilliant, but not of proof quality. Later 1965 SMS had very brilliant fields.

Its equivalent to the 1968 S in luster. I also have a 63 that I thought could have been a possibility as well. Does comparing these help? It just makes my head hurt sometimes trying to tell the difference in these things sometimes lol

No, the additional nickels are not of help (at least to me).
I believe your nickel is a normal business strike nickel.

All nickels above appear to be lightly to moderately circulated. They may look better than the average 50- to 60-year old nickel pulled from circulation, but they carry no premium. The 1968-S is a circulation strike; at that time, San Francisco was still minting nickels and cents for circulation.

Looks like a lightly circulated coin. Some contact marks on it. But the SBS ones were the ones that were not as strong as proofs, they looked like these:
