Hello! I was going through some rolls of nickels and as I was rerolling what I searched, this nickel with a reeded edge jumped out at me! The reeding is even and uniform all the way around the edge. The weight is 4.87g and the width and thickness looks to be the same as other nickels. What could have caused this?

The reeding looks rough. I will say for sure PMD, maybe somebody took a file to the edge.

The reeding is produced by the collar, and as far as I know a reeded nickel has never been produced by the mint. Even if it was "mint sport", they'd have to make a special collar. I did find this "promotional gimmick" from 1941 https://coins.ha.com/itm/lincoln-ce.../1236-3160.s so something similar perhaps?

With the unevenness of the reeds, I would say someone with nothing better to do has intentionally added the reeding which would make it PMD.

Fun find. Agree, does appear to be the result of a do it yourself effort. Keep it as a curiosity.

Fun find but probably took somebody a lot of time and effort to produce this altered coin.

Thanks for all the insight! I was leaning toward this being some type of handmade novelty. I know that at one point the U.S. Mint struck coins for other countries and considered that maybe this was struck on a foreign coin planchet. Seeing that the measurements and weight are basically consistent with other Jefferson nickels, I felt that was less likely. Thanks!
