That ridge you see on the ends of the letters is Die Deterioration Damage ( DDD).
Every time a die pounds out a new coin, the force of the strike is directed outward on the die, towards the edge. Slowly over time the die breaks down, losing it's shape and the devices get distorted.
The base of the E in Liberty is raised slightly as well, and this would be due to the die being slowly deformed by the force of the strike also.
