Russell this is an indirect sale even if I wanted I could not pay the person more they put these items up for a price they thought reasonable and now its in the hands of the third party. I would not consider this taking advantage, just a part of the hunt. People over charge people under charge. In addition there is no real way to prove the items are real at the present time till purchase so the fact js if they actually cared about the coins they would take them somewhere else or do more research but as it stands they seem to just be trying to make a little money regardless of true value.

Pineapple, an 1877 cent is something that needs to be real. Focus on that rather than getting a deal.

I guess it's kind of fascinating to see this kind of coin deal, and I hope you return here with pics and the outcome. There's a third party, but they're just passing along the $3.50 price to you? The original seller sets a price of $3.50 each, based on what? Anybody can look up an 1877 cent and see that it's worth >100x $3.50. Another option on the "seller not knowing" scenario is that the coins were stolen.

Perhaps buy it for the $3.50, get it authenticated, and if its real, send the buyer $350.00 with a note.

What I'm wondering is why the shipping is $20? It could be shipped for $.55 If you don't want to just put it in an envelope a flat rate priority box is what $7? To get to $20 it would have to be priority insured or registered with a significant value stated.

@Pineapple,

Just wanted to let you know the reason all of us were going nuts about an 1877 Indian Head cent for $3.50 is that even in low grade its a $400-$500 coin. The US Mint only made 852000 but based on the surviving number and the limited die traits, the believe is that the number is either not correct or very few of those coins actually made it to circulation. Hence why we were all in disbelief (some like me more than others).

The 1887 while old, is not a rare coin as over 45 million were minted. They are readily available in low grade for a low cost. So when you posted an 1887 we can close out this chapter, as $3.50 is a fair price for the 1887 in low grade.
